We are now working in partnership with Candlelighters!

Recently Danni and I were contacted by Brian, Corporate Fundraiser at Candlelighters, a children’s cancer charity based in Leeds to ask whether we would like to support the organisation.

Academic Appointments regularly support charities, you may have seen on our social media that we recently supported Leeds Mencap for #Learningdisabilityweek. In fact this Academic Year 2016/17 we have raised a total of £1090.30 for charity and collected for two local food bank collections! So we jumped at the chance of meeting Brian and seeing how we could successfully work together to support hundreds of families going through a life changing situation.

On Tuesday, we visited The Square where Candlelighters are situated. The building offered a very welcoming and homely environment with its brightly coloured interior and comfy armchairs offering a ‘home from home’ for families. The Square offers extra support to families and is a chance to step away from the ward.

We were then greeted by Brian and Lucy, Marketing, PR & Communications Coordinator who explained to us that they would like to take us to the children’s ward at Leeds General Infirmary which is situated just over the road from The Square so that we could gain a better understanding of the work Candlelighters do.

At first, I was a little apprehensive about going to the ward as to be truthful I thought I would get quite emotional, but after being shown around I felt more at ease and inspired by the work that goes on in the hospital ward.

During our time on the ward, we were introduced to the Play Leaders who kindly explained what their role was on the ward. Hats off to these ladies, they are extremely hard working! We also got to see Candlelighters Pavilion, a fun space created for patients and their families and friends to escape the hospital.

We then went back to The Square to discuss each other’s organisations in further detail. During the discussion, it was evident to me and Danni that we were going to be able to work really well with Candlelighters!

After our meeting with Brian and Lucy, Danni and I were wowed by the work they do and were eager to get a partnership into place! This would involve donating the money from our £1 dress down Friday and supporting Candlelighters events over the next year.

After consideration from the whole team we are now delighted to announce that we are working in partnership with Candlelighters, and look forward to our future collaborations together! Being a local, children’s charity it make sense to partner with them!

Keep a look out for our upcoming events with Candlelighters.
