Safeguarding

Protecting children from harm in their safe school setting is critical. As an education recruitment agency, we make sure both the schools we work with and the staff we provide are as committed as we are to the wellbeing and safety of every person under the age of 18.

Keeping Children Safe in Education

The safeguarding & welfare of young people begins with us

Our designated safeguarding lead is a former headteacher. Not only does this give you the peace of mind that we know exactly which safeguarding steps and policies to follow, it also means we truly understand the processes and why they’re crucial.

With Academic Appointments, you can trust we’ll take every vital step, and beyond, to protect the children in your school.

How we keep your children safe in school

  • Have a full-time team solely committed to safeguarding.
  • Employ a former headteacher as our designated safeguarding lead.
  • Confirm every candidate has completed a recognised safeguarding certification before they step foot in your school.
  • Make sure all our internal staff have taken an assessed NCSL/CWDC safer recruitment training course (child protection and HR officers of Leeds Education Authority independently run this course).
  • Hold the REC Audited Education Gold Standard Accreditation, increasing both our compliance and your peace of mind.
  • Guarantee all our applicants go through a strict vetting 'MOT' system (our 12-point check).

Comprehensive vetting for every candidate

The 12-point check is our step-by-step child safety process. It makes sure every candidate meets the unwavering safeguarding expectations of both our agency and our schools. The method never changes, so you can rest assured nothing is missed.

To find more information about the child safety steps we - and you - must follow, and learn how to report any issues or worries, download our safeguarding guide.

Our 12 Step vetting Process

1. Personal Interview - Whether in person or online, we always do this face-to-face.
2. Initial Assessment- This includes phone screening and a review of a candidate’s CV.
3. Identity Checks- It’s vital we can be certain a candidate is exactly who they claim to be.
4. Enhanced Child Workforce DBS Checks- We make sure these are always updated for children, and adults where necessary.
5. The Children’s Barred List- We check this Department of Education database before we even begin to consider a candidate for placement.
6. Qualification Confirmation- This makes sure the candidate has the right skills for your school.
7. Teaching Regulation Agency Assessment- This database checks for misconduct claims.
8. References- We always ask a candidate to provide a minimum of two referees.
9. Safeguarding Checks- This crucial stage includes guaranteeing all child protection statuses have been duly updated, and the candidate is not disqualified from working with children.
10. Right To Work- This makes sure a candidate can legally work in your UK-based school.
11. Medical Fitness- We considerately check a candidate is physically and mentally well.
12. English Communication- Finally, we make sure the applicant is able to communicate appropriately with your school’s pupils and wider community.
